Overview
Thanks to the ever-expanding nbn™ network in Australia, the telecommunications industry has grown exponentially and now requires technicians in the following areas:
- Cabling and Network Infrastructure Technicians
- Network Engineers
- Cyber Security Professionals
- Electronic Security Technicians
- Audio Visual (AV) Technicians
If you are interested in a career in any of the above, then this hands-on, practical-focused training is where you start. It is designed to take a student with minimum or no experience through the technical requirements to start their new career. Students will learn how to install and test telecommunications cabling and outlets using specialist tools and test equipment and much more.
Successful completion of this course will enable you to then get the practical knowledge to apply for an Open Cabling Registration (License) to work in the telecommunications industry in Australia.
This course is delivered at Comtech’s state of the art Welshpool training centre, in collaboration with the Department of Training and Workforce Development (DTWD) in WA.

- Existing Worker – 1 week (5 days)

On Successful completion, the student will receive a statement of attainment for the following units
1. ICTWHS204 Follow work health and safety and environmental policy and procedures
2. ICTTEN208 Use electrical skills when working with telecommunications networks
3. ICTTEN202 Use hand and power tools
4. ICTCBL247 Install, maintain and modify customer premises communications cabling ACMA Open Rule
This skill set provides credit towards ICT30519 Certificate III in Telecommunications Technology.
The Open Registration course covers:
- Mandatory cabling knowledge and practical skills
- The regulatory environment in Australia
Practical Exercises
The Open Registration course includes the following practical exercises:
- Standard telephone connections
- Lead in cable termination into Network Termination Devices (NTD) and line modules
- Installation of building and floor distributors
- RJ 45 connections
- Telecommunications Cabling Advice form completion
Assessment includes:
- Knowledge-Based Assessment (Completed on the Learning Management System)
- Practical Assessments and Observations
- Verbal Questioning
The WA State Government, through Jobs and Skills WA, subsidises vocational education and training (VET) courses in priority areas, to reduce or remove the fees and make training more accessible to all Western Australians.
To be eligible for fee free training, reduced-fee qualifications, or a subsidised training place; you must have left school*, have your primary place of residence in Western Australia, and are either:
- an Australian citizen; or
- a permanent visa holder; or

- Over 78% of organisations saw an email-based ransomware attack in 2021 resulting in irretrievable loss of data, an increase of nearly 500% since the start of the pandemic.
This short subsidised course is your introduction to the concepts of Cyber Attack prevention
It is ideal for anyone who is interested in the following:
- protecting yourself from data or identity theft and de-risking financial loss
- training your staff to be cyber aware in the workplace
- starting your career as a cyber security professional
This course is your starting point in your career as a Network Engineer or Cyber Security Specialist.

Part 1 – Protect your personal information and online profile
BSBXCS301 Protect own personal online profile from cyber security
In this part of the course the student will learn to Identify existing and potential security threats to their own personal online profile by understanding how to do the following:
- Determine where all their current online accounts and profiles are located
- How to identify common threats to the security of their online profiles
- Securely backup and restore data
Part 2 – Working Cyber Smart in the workplace
BSBXCS302 Identify and report online security threats
In this part of the course the student will learn the skills and knowledge required to identify and report online security threats to limit potential impact of cyber security breaches in the workplace by understanding the following:
- Follow internal policies, procedures and plans relating to potential online security breaches
- Learn how to identify features of common types of potentially fraudulent communications including but not limited to:
- Common types of online scams and security risks, including phishing scams
- Common techniques of phishing and spear phishing used by attackers, including:
- spam email and SMS text
- social engineering, including telephone calls, social media and website requests for information
- Learn how to implement techniques to verify suspicious requests for information including indicators of insecure connection to websites, in particular where data is being collected.
Part 3 – Identify online security threats and implement actions to secure and protect data including disaster recovery methods
BSBXCS302 Identify and report online security threats
In this part of the course the student will learn how to handle Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and workplace information responsibly by understanding and demonstrating the following:
- Implement practices and procedures relating to workplace information including the requirements relating to securely managing PII and workplace information
- Identify and manage sensitive data in your workplace environment including:
- identifying sensitive data
- securely storing, sharing and managing customer information
- encryption, and protocols for its uses
- data classification
- media and document labelling
- monitoring and reporting faults and malfunctions in IT infrastructure
- Apply privacy policies to all data devices incorporating Industry best practice including but not limited to:
- password protection
- storage locations
- securely sharing
- data deletion

This part of the course is designed to equip participants with the skills and knowledge to develop and sustain cyber security awareness within their workplace. By the end of the course, participants will have a comprehensive understanding of how to evaluate and enhance cyber security measures and ensure adherence to best practices. Below are the key learning points:
1. Create and Maintain an Awareness Program
- Develop a cyber security awareness program that reflects organisation-wide best practices.
- Deliver the programme.
2. Contribute to Cyber Security Policies
- Participate in the development of cyber security policies and procedures.
- Effectively communicate these policies to relevant personnel.
3. Present Insights and Impact Assessments
- Present findings from reviews and training to relevant stakeholders.
- Discuss the potential impacts of security measures on workplace operations.
4. Communicate Review Outcomes
- Share review results and recommendations with relevant personnel in line with organisational protocols.
- Ensure that communication supports continuous improvement in workplace cyber security.
