Overview
A traineeship is a structured program, usually in a non-trade related area, which is available to both part-time and full-time employees. The outcome of traineeship training is a trade level Qualification recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). The Australian Government is committed to supporting Australian Apprenticeships as an important mechanism in meeting the changing need of the Australian economy and improving productivity. Some incentives are based on whether a trainee/apprentice is a new or existing worker.
New Employee Trainee/Apprentice
A new employee traineeship is for someone who has just begun working in the industry or is new to the company. This person would likely require more personal training and greater opportunities to develop the skills through on-the-job training.
Existing Worker Trainee/Apprentice
An existing worker traineeship is for someone who has been with the employer for more than 3 months but may not necessarily be new to the industry. This person would be ideally suited to enrolment as an existing worker trainee.
National Skills List
The National Skills Needs List identifies trades that are deemed to be in national skill shortage. The National Skills Needs List is used to determine eligibility for the following incentives and personal benefits available under the Australian Apprenticeships Incentives Program:
• *Rural and Regional Skills Shortage incentive; and
• **Support for Adult Australian Apprentices.
User Choice
User Choice is a national policy whereby State and Territory Governments fund RTOs to provide structured training to Australian Apprentices. These funds reduce the cost of the training that an Australian Apprentice or the employer will have to pay under an Australian Apprenticeship. The amount of funding and training available under User Choice is different in each State and Territory, with each State and Territory having different priority areas to direct their User Choice funds.
